Preferred Specimen

CAPD fluid received in effluent bag or 50 mL of fluid transferred to sterile container
In addition to the submission of the effluent, also may submit Aerobic and Lytic Bactec™ bottles, each inoculated with 10 mL of fluid by the floor.

Instructions

NOTE: All CAPD fluids are evaluated before set-up to determine WBC count. Specimens with counts of <100 WBCs/uL are not set up for routine culture except with specific clinician request.

Specimen Stability

For Fluid: Send to the Lab immediately.
Send Ambient/ Room Temperature
DO NOT refrigerate specimens.
DO NOT place specimens on ice.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Unacceptable specimens:
Specimens with <100 WBCs/mL without specific clinician request

Clinical Significance

Peritonitis due to continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is often associated with staphylococci; viridans group streptococci; non-fermenting, Gram negative rods; Candida albicans and other Candida spp.; and fungi The Gram stain is a critical test for the rapid, presumptive diagnosis of infectious agents. The results of CAPD fluid culture will assist the clinician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with peritoneal infections.
