Instructions
Materials Required Label slides with patient's name and at least one additional identifier (DOB or MR#). Area to be aspirated is prepped with alcohol. Local anesthesia is optional and dependent upon the patient, the site aspirated and the number of aspirations. The mass is stabilized with one hand. Using the pistol grip syringe holder, the needle is inserted into the mass. A small amount of suction is applied as the needle is moved fore and aft in the mass. The aspiration is complete when visible material appears in the needle hub. The needle is withdrawn. Firm pressure is applied by a second individual to prevent hematoma formation. The syringe is removed from the holder. The needle is then removed. The plunger of the syringe is pulled back. The needle is reattached to the syringe. The material within the needle is then expelled onto the glass slide(s). Touch needle to slide, place 1 or 2 drops onto each slide. Place a labeled, clean slide on top of the labeled slide with the drop and pull apart. Place 1 slide immediately into 95% alcohol or spray fix with cytology fixative held 6-12 inches from the slide before any air drying occurs and allow the other slide to air dry. The air dried slide(s) should be labeled with and 'A'. The needle should then be rinsed in CytoLyt or McCoy's fixative depending on which ancillary studies may be required. The needle should be discarded into an appropriate container. Slides should be fixed 15 minutes in alcohol and then removed to air dry. Spray fixed slides must be allowed to dry before submitting to the laboratory. The slides and containers should be submitted to the Surgical Pathology Lab. Order should be placed in the computer or submitted on an appropriately completed requisition including patient history. Transport Temperature: Refrigerated
