Preferred Specimen
Whole blood collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate (light blue-top) tube NOTE: This tube can also be used for in-house D-Dimer, Fibrinogen, and/or PT testing.


Other Acceptable Specimens
0.5 mL platelet-poor plasma collected in a 3.2% sodium citrate (light blue-top) tube, transferred to a plastic screw-cap vial


Instructions
Draw blood into light blue-top tube, filling tube to mark indicated on the tube. Do not overfill.

Room temperature: 4 hours (2 hours if on heparin therapy) Refrigerated: Not recommended Frozen (plasma): 2 weeks Frozen (whole blood): unacceptable

Hemolyzed specimens. Refrigerated specimens.

Clinical Significance
This is a screening test for deficiencies of plasma coagulation factors other than Factors VII and XIII. This test is also used to monitor patients on heparin therapy.
