Preferred Specimen
  • Preferred – oropharyngeal/OP (throat) with BD UVT Transport Media
Second collection is required - Nares collected with a polyester swab and transported in saline

Note: Both BD UVT and Saline specimens MUST be submitted for ongoing validation studies.

Instructions
Collect OP or NP swab specimen according to standard technique. Do not let the swab touch any other surface. Immediately place the swab specimen into a 3 mL BD UVT (Universal Viral Transport) Tube.
Collection of Nares/Saline:
  • Insert the tip of a polyester swab 1-2 cm into the anterior nares.
  • Rotate swab against nasal mucosa for 15 rotations and withdraw.
  • Repeat with the other anterior nare using the same swab.
  • Do not let the swab touch any other surface before placing it into the saline tube.
  • Remove the cap from the saline tube.
  • Insert swab into the saline tube.
  • Carefully leverage the swab against the inside of the tube rim.
  • Bend swab against rim until it breaks off.
  • Place lid back on tube and close tightly.
