Clinical Significance
Anaerobic bacteria may cause severe and often fatal infections that can involve any organ system. Since >85% of anaerobic infections are of endogenous origin and are often polymicrobic, it is necessary for the laboratory to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria from properly selected and collected specimens free of contamination with normal flora.
When a specimen has been properly collected and there is a single anaerobic species isolated in pure culture, identification to genus or group level can be useful in determining possible portals of entry in the infective process and in guiding antibiotic therapy.
