Preferred Specimen
Semen (total ejaculate) collected in a plastic leakproof container
Instructions
*The sample should be collected after a minimum of 48 hours and no longer than 7 days of sexual abstinence. The sample should be obtained by masturbation (without artificial lubrication). The container should be warm (at least at room temperature to just above) to avoid reduction in sperm motility. *Ordinary condoms must not be used for semen collection because they may interfere with the viability of spermatozoa. In cases in which masturbation is not possible or against an individual's values, the specimen can be collected in a non-spermicidal condom following intercourse. *The sample must be kept warm and delivered to the York Hospital Laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. Note the date and exact time of collection and the time the specimen was received in the lab.

Clinical Significance
A semen analysis is used to determine whether a man might be infertile. A semen analysis to determine fertility should be performed on a minimum of two samples at least seven days apart over a period of two to three months because the sperm count and semen consistency will vary from day to day and some conditions can temporarily affect sperm levels.
