Clinical Significance
The presence of elevated concentrations of protein in urine (proteinuria) is a key finding in primary renal disease of glomerular, tubular, or mixed origin. Proteinuria is also seen in patients with systemic disorders that affect the kidneys such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, vascular disease, neoplasia, drug toxicity, and certain infectious diseases. Proteinuria may also exist as either a benign or transient condition.
