Electrolyte Panel
MessageTest performed at York Hospital Laboratory.
Test Code
LYTES
CPT Codes
80051
Includes
Sodium Potassium Chloride CO2 Anion Gap
Preferred Specimen
0.3 mL plasma collected in a lithium heparin (green-top) gel separator tube
Other Acceptable Specimens
0.3 mL serum collected in a serum separator tube (SST) 0.3 mL serum collected in a no additive (red-top) tube, transferred to a plastic screw-cap vial
Instructions
Remove the plasma from the cellular material within 90 minutes of collection. Every effort should be made to fill vacuum tubes completely when collecting blood because a decrease of CO2 up to 3 mmol/L can be observed with partially filled tubes. The patient should avoid any exercise of the arm or hand before or during collection because opening and closing the fist increases potassium concentration by 10% to 20%.
