Preferred Specimen
Fasting specimen: 0.2 mL plasma collected in a lithium heparin (green-top) tube
Other specimens: 0.2 mL serum collected in a serum separator tube (SST)
NOTE: Either tube (SST or lithium heparin) is acceptable for each draw.

Reference Range
Diagnostic for Diabetes Mellitus:
     Fasting Glucose >126 mg/dL (confirmed by repeat testing)
     or 2 Hour Glucose >=200 mg/dL

Impaired Fasting Glucose: Fasting Glucose >=100 and <126 mg/dL
Impaired Glucose Tolerance: 2 Hour Glucose >=140 and <200 mg/dL

Normal: Fasting Glucose <100 mg/dL and 2 Hour Glucose <140 mg/dL


Clinical Significance
Glucose loading test, most sensitive test to detect diabetes mellitus, is used to detect postprandial hypoglycemia. Abnormal results should be verified by repeat testing unless results are initially grossly abnormal.
