Limitations
Reduced in vivo RBC survival rates result in falsely decreased levels. Most hemoglobinopathies produce invalid results.

Hgb A1c:
                Normal range 4.5-6.1 %
        Diabetic levels:
                Therapeutic goal <7%
                Re-evaluate therapy >8%
Calculated Mean Glucose Therapeutic Goal <150 mg/dL


Clinical Significance
To assist with control of blood glucose levels, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has recommended glycated hemoglobin testing (HbA1c) twice a year for patients with stable glycemia, and quarterly for patients with poor glucose control.
