Clinical Significance
CSF protein values are decreased when there is an increased rate of reabsorption with increased intercranial pressure or a loss of fluid due to trauma. Causes of increased CSF protein values include bacterial or viral meningitis, cerebral hemorrhage, trauma, decreased absorption due to an obstruction, and increased synthesis of immunoglobulins.
