Clinical Significance
Measurement of total protein in peritoneal fluid is useful in the differentiation of exudates and transudates. An elevated pleural fluid protein level may indicate tuberculosis or parapneumonic effusion. An elevated total protein level in synovial fluid confirms the presence of an inflammatory process.
