Clinical Significance
Glucose measurment in body fluid may be useful, with other laboratory tests, to evaluate effusions. In synovial and peritoneal fluids, decreased concentrations are associated with bacterial infections, inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and occasionally malignancy. Decreased pleural fluid glucose is most consistent with rheumatoid arthritis and grossly purulent parapneumonic exudates. Pericardial fluid glucose levels may be a useful adjunct to serum levels in evaluating bacterial endocarditis and malignant effusions.
