Muscle Biopsy for Special Studies
Message
Request test on manual Surgical Pathology Request form (not ordered in computer)
Test Code
Surgical Tissue Muscle Biopsy for Special Studies
Preferred Specimen
Two (acceptable) - three (preferred) cylindrical in shape (2cm X 0.5mm) biopsies with the majority of the fibers running lengthwise. Submit tissue with known muscle disease that shows clinical signs of involvement but that has not reached "end-stage" atrophy. Avoid muscle needed for EMG studies because the latter may cause local reactive inflammation difficult to distinguish from focas of polymyositis. Typically, the triceps, biceps or vastus lateralis is chosen. Ideally the muscle should not be allowed to contract. Pin or clamp muscle to tongue compressor to prevent contraction.
Minimum Volume
Two 2cm X 0.5 mm cylindrical segments, three preferred
