Preferred Specimen
Bone marrow core (s) - submit in 10% formalin
Bone marrow clot/aspirate - submit in 10% formalin
Bone marrow smears for Wright and iron stains - 5 to 10 fresh smears
Peripheral blood smear - 1 fresh smear
Bone marrow for chromosome analysis - 1 green top tube, 1-2 mLs
Bone marrow for FISH testing - 1 green top tube, 1- mLs
Bone marrow for Flow Cytometry - 1 purple top tube, 1-2 mLs
Bone marrow for molecular studies - 1 purple tops tube, 1-2 mLs
*CBC collection order required with all Bone Marrow requests


Instructions
Specimens are processed Monday - Friday and must be received by 3pm to process same day.  When lab assitance is requested for collection of specimens, it must be scheduled in advance with the Hematology department in the the lab.  Submit a "Pathology Specimen Diagnosis Request for Bone Marrow" form along with the specimen.  Complete all highlighted areas including pertinent clinical history and ICD9 codes.


Transport Container
Container with 10% formalin must have formaldehyde precaution label
Purple/green top tubes must not be expired
Slide smears must be submitted in slide holders and include the patients name & date of birth on each slide


Report Available
Two working days - two weeks.  Flow cytometry, chromosome analysis, & molecular tests are performed and/or processed at a reference lab.
