Preferred Specimen
Specimen fixed in Non-GYN ThinPrep vial (Preservcyt) or Cytolyt fluid.
Other Acceptable Specimens
Sample smeared on glass slide and immediately fixed with Spray Cytology Fixative or submerged in 95% Ethanol.
Instructions
Collect by aggressively sampling the suspected viral lesion with a swab or brush.
For preferred sample submission, immediately submerge collection device tip into a Non-Gynecologic ThinPrep vial or Cytolyt tube. Cap and submit to laboratory.
Sample can also be smeared onto a charged glass slide and immediatley submerged in 95% Ethanol or sprayed with Cytology fixative for fixation.

Methodology
If submitted in ThinPrep vial or Cytolyt, liquid based slide preparation will be employed.
If glass slide is submtted, pap stain will be used.
Setup Schedule
Daily, Monday through Friday.
Clinical Significance
The Tzanck test, also Tzanck smear, is scraping of an ulcer base to look for Tzanck cells.
