Preferred Specimen
Fresh "deep cough" material delivered immediatley to lab on Ziskind 5.  Refrigerate if delay is anticipated.  Three to five samples collected on successive days is optimal to detect cancer.  NOTE: Early morning specimen have increased yield for tumors. 


Minimum Volume
Any volume can be evaluated. 


Other Acceptable Specimens


Induced sputum.




Instructions
Collect deep cough sample in sterile container.  Cap tightly and submit.


Transport Container
Any sterile container with lid.


Transport Temperature
Refrigerate or deliver immediately for processing.


Methodology
Liquid based slide preparation and cell block if sample volume permits.

Setup Schedule
Daily, Monday through Friday.
