Preferred Specimen
Fixed specimen in Cytolyt fluid obtained via lumbar puncture (LP) or Ommaya. Please specify collection method.
Minimum Volume
Any volume can be evaluated but at least 5-10cc is recommended to rule out malignancy.
Other Acceptable Specimens
Refreigerated fresh specimen accepted up to 48 hours from collection.
Instructions
Pour up to 5cc of CSF into pre-filled Cytolyt tube. If fixative is unavailable, deliver immediately to Ziskind 5 (preferable) or Floating 3 lab for fixation. If delay in fixation is expected, refrigerate.
Transport Container
Cytolyt tubes are supplied by Cytology Laboratory on Ziskind 5. Tubes can also be obtained from the Clinical Laboratory on Floating 3. Call pathology resident on call with problems.
Transport Temperature
Fixed specimen can be room temperature or refrigerated. Fresh specimen should be refrigerated.
Specimen Stability
Cells degenerate rapidly in the absence of fixation with Cytolyt fluid.

Liquid based slide preparation.
