High Risk HPV can be performed from the same specimen with specific orders written on the requisition.   Reflexive testing not available.  NOTE:  HPV testing on anal samples has not been validated or FDA approved.  Therefore, the significance of these results is uncertain.  A negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection.

Distal portion of anal canal




Instructions

Use cytology brush or Dacron swab collection device to obtain sample from Anal/Rectal Trasformation Zone (distal portion of anal canal).  Immediately submerge and vigorously swish swab (press and swirl against bottom and sides of collection vial).  DISCARD COLLECTION DEVICE; DO NOT LEAVE IN VIAL.  Other collection devices such as cotton tipped applicators will retain cells and could cause unsatisfactory results.

Limitations

If not ordered up front, HPV testing can be added to the ThinPrep vial for 30 days from the date of collection.  Laboratory will store specimen until this time has lapsed.  Call Cytology x5839 for add on HPV testing.




Reference Range

Submitting clinician will be contacted by email for the following "critical results"

  1. High Grade Squamous Intraepitheliai Lesion in a patient without previous abnormal results
  2. Atypical Glandular Cells (AGC), favor neoplastic or AIS
  3. Positive for Malignancy
