Preferred Specimen
Bone marrow collected in syringes that have been rinsed with heparin to prevent clotting and then transferred into sterile green top sodium heparin tube.
 


Minimum Volume
0.5 ml


Instructions
Bone marrow specimen collected in a green top sodium heparin tube and kept at room temperature.
Call the Cytogenetics laboratory for specimen pickup.


Transport Container
Green top sodium heparin tube.
 


Transport Temperature
Room temperature.


Specimen Stability
Submit to Cytogenetics laboratory as soon as possible from specimen collection.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Because the collection of this type of specimen is invasive, specimens will be used whenever possible.
Any obvious problems will be directly communicated back to the Physician.
Any wet specimen received over 3 days from collection will be rejected.


Setup Schedule
Specimens are set up on the same day they are received in the laboratory.


Clinical Significance
Indications include: Myeloproliferative disease,leukemia, myeloma, pancytopenia.
