Limitations
This test cannot distinguish between Sickle cell trait and Sickle cell anemia.
This test will also be positive in the presence of other sickling hemoglobins
such as C Harlem.  Therefore, if this test is positive a Hemoglobinopathy
Screen will be reflexively ordered for identification.
Elevated levels of hemoglobin F may cause false positive results
Samples from infants < 6 months of age may yield false negative results due to incomplete synthesis of hemoglobins at that age.
Samples from recently transfused patients may yield false negative results due to dilution with non-Hgb S transfused red cells.

Reference Range
Negative

Clinical Significance
Screening test for sickling hemoglobins (Primarily  Hgb S).  When test results are positive, a Hemoglobinopathy Screen is automatically ordered.
