Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Swabs are not acceptable.
Not performed on urine specimens which may contain saprophytic mycobacteria that cannot be distinguished by smear from M.tuberculosis.
Not performed on cerebrospinal fluid due to low sensitivity of mycobacteria staining in this specimen type. 


Methodology
Concentrated Auramine-Rhodamine stain read by fluorescent microscopy.

Setup Schedule
Sunday - Saturday


Limitations
Performed on CSF only upon special request where cell count, glucose, and protein levels indicate high likelihood of M. tuberculosis.


Reference Range
No acid fast bacilli seen.
