Preferred Specimen
Whole Blood


Minimum Volume
4, 2.7 mL sodium citrate tubes. Sample MUST be drawn to minimum fill line on the tube or the sample will be rejected as QNS. Do NOT collect on ice.


Instructions
Do not place the specimen on ice (platelets undergo spontaneous aggregation is stored in the cold).

4, Light Blue Top (Sodium Citrate), 1.8 or 2.7 mL draw

Specimen Stability

Room Temperature: 3 hours




Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolysis, lipemia, QNS, clotted.
Patient's with platelet counts less than 100,000/µl will be rejected.

Limitations
Platelet aggregation should not be performed on any patient who has ingested aspirin, aspirin-containing compounds, or any platelet function inhibitor within eight days prior to the test.


Reference Range
ADP, Epinephrine, Collagen, Ristocetin, Arachidonic Acid: 60- 100%


Clinical Significance
To identify congenital or acquired platelet aggregation defects. Platelet count should be > 100,000/µl
