Instructions
Deliver to lab immediately.  The first sample may be taken at any time, but at or shortly after a paroxysm (fever spike)  is optimal.  Travel history is helpful to assist in rapid diagnosis.

3 mL Purple Top (EDTA)

Room Temperature


Specimen Stability
Stable at room temp for 8 hours OR  2-8° C for 48 hours


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolysis (in vitro), QNS, Clotted


Methodology
Fluorescent Microscopy, Wright Stain bright light Miscroscopy

Setup Schedule
Preliminary Screen: 24/7; Speciation: M-F 9am- 4pm


Limitations
May require that multiple samples be sent over a period of several days to find blood parasites.   A negative result does not rule out the possibility of a parasitic infection. 


Reference Range
No blood parasite seen.


Clinical Significance
Detection and speciation of blood parasites.
