Whole blood drawn in either a lithium heparin syringe (blood gas syringe) or a lithium heparin green top tube.
Serum (Gold Top SST) is not acceptable.

Reference Range
Reference Range: 4.2-5.2 mg/dL
Critical Value: Less than or equal to 3 mg/dL or greater than or equal to 8 mg/dL.
 
 


Clinical Significance
This test is used to assess calcium states during liver transplantation surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, or any procedure requiring rapid transfusion of whole blood in neonates and in critically ill patients.  It is also used in the evaluation of patients with abnormal calcium values.
