D-Dimer

Message
Performed in the Hematology Laboratory x5475, 76.  Sample MUST be drawn to minimum fill line on tube

Test Code
DD

CPT Codes
85380

Preferred Specimen
plasma

Minimum Volume
1.8 or 2.7 mL (depending on tube size).  Sample MUST be drawn to minimum fill line on tube or the sample will be rejected as QNS.

Instructions
To prevent QNS sample draws:  If the sodium citrate tube is the only sample to be collected with a butterfly collection device, draw a discard tube OR collect after drawing other samples.

Transport Container
Light Blue Top (Sodium Citrate), 1.8mL draw or 2.7 mL draw tubes

Transport Temperature
Room Temperature

Specimen Stability

Refrigerator Stability: 24 hours

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolyzed, QNS, clotted

Methodology

turbidimetric immunoassay

Setup Schedule
24/7

Limitations
Heparin contamination from line draw gives erroneous results. No interference up to 500 mg/dL of hemoglobin, 1327 mg/dL of triglycerides, 18 mg/dL of bilirubin, and 1400 IU/mL rheumatoid factor. D-dimer results over 69 ug/dL will be reported out as >69.0.

Reference Range
0-243 ng/mL (DDU).  Patients with low to moderate pre-test probability of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and D-dimer values of <230 ng/mL  (DDU) have a negative predictive value of 95% for exclusion of VTE.

Clinical Significance
Detects fibrin degradation products, useful in the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), DVT and PE.
