Culture, Throat (Group A Strep Screen)

Performed in the Microbiology Laboratory x5785
Other predominating and potentially pathogenic organisms that are recovered in the Group A  Strep Screen Throat  Culture will be reported, such as Group C and Group G Streptococcus, but since Group A Streptococci is the most common agent of pharyngitis, it is the only "routine" organism sought.
Any other agent sought should be noted on the requisition.
Throat cultures are contraindicated for patient with inflamed epiglottis.

Instructions
Using a tongue depressor, hold the tongue down, sample posterier pharynx, tonsills and inflamed areas with Culture Swab.

Limitations
R/o beta-hemolytic Group A Strep (Strep pyogenes) and if present in significant quantity, beta-hemolytic Group C Streptococcus and beta-hemolytic Group G Streptococcus.
Susceptibility testing will not be performed on  these  isolates from throat cultures

Clinical Significance
Recommended for all pediatric patients with Negative point of care testing for Group A strep screen.
(Signify test) performed in outpatient sites and the Emergency Department)
