As of February 2018 DFA and culture for mucocutaneous , genital or occular lesions is replaced by Herpes PCR -Performed in the Microbiology Laboratory X65785
Culture will only be performed for surface screening or newborns or if susceptibility testing is warranted.
For rule out of HSV in other sources (such as bronchial lavage), see viral culture (CXVIR)
Send in viral transport media to the lab immediately by pneumatic tube.
If not sent through tube, please place on ice.

Transport Container
Culture swab in viral transport medium. Obtain from Microbiology lab,  X65785.


Transport Temperature
RT if sent to lab immediately.
If transport >15 min, please send on ice.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimen not received in viral transport media

Note :  As of February 2018  culture for mucocutaneous , genital or occular lesions is replaced by Herpes PCR -Performed in the Microbiology Laboratory X65785 (Mucocutaneous, Skin , Genital and Lip lesions will be tested for HSV by PCR only)
If Varicella Zoster suspected, see CXVIR order.
