Culture, Gonorrhoeae
MessagePerformed in the Microbiology Laboratory x65785. Eye, Throat, Rectal. Culture primarily used for sources not approved for RNA-TMA testing. Call lab x 65785 to obtain JEMBEC agar plate. Do not use outdated media. Bring JEMBEC to room temperature before innoculation. Roll swab on agar. Place the CO2 generating tab in the well at the side of the plate and place the plate into the small polyethylene bag and seal to create a CO2 enriched environment. Send to lab immediately.

Preferred Specimen
Eye, Genital, Rectal and Throat swab. (Rectal: swab the anal crypts just inside the anal ring. Avoid fecal contamination as much as possible.)
Instructions
Eye swabs premoistened with saline, (Conjunctiva), Throat- (pharyngeal) swab
For Rectal: Carefully insert swab beyond anal sphincter and gently rotate to sample anal crypts.
Place patient label on agar side of plate.
Place CO2 generating tablet in the well on the agar side of the plate.
Obtain specimen with culture swab.
Roll the swab onto the agar medium in an S formation.
Place the closed JEMBEC plate in the small polyethylene bag provided with the plate and seal to keep in the CO2.
Place the small, bagged JEMBEC plate into the biohazard transport bag and send to lab immediately.
For Rectal: Carefully insert swab beyond anal sphincter and gently rotate to sample anal crypts.
