Minimum Volume
Instructions
Clean skin as if preparing for routine blood culture. Refer to
Clean-(disinfect) top of Blood Isolator tube with 10% PVP iodine. 10mL blood - large tube, 1.5mL blood - pediatric isolator
Gently invert tubes 4-5 times to mix blood with lysing agents
Butterfly draws are discouraged because blood clotting may be initiated prior to entry into the tube.

Clinical Significance
Fungal isolators are useful for detection of disseminated fungemia, especially with dimorphic fungi and if a patient is immuncompromised and /or has visited an endemic region. Usually ordered following Infectious Disease service consult. Cultures are held 4 weeks before a final negative report is issued. Full identification of any positive mould isolates.
