Alias/See Also
Peritoneal Dialysate Culture,

CPT Codes
87070 (aerobic culture) 87205 (gram stain)

Includes
Bacterial culture and Gram stain. (Reflex to additional bacterial isolate identification if pathogenic organisms are isolated CPT 87077 and bacterial suceptibility if required)

Preferred Specimen
Requires three collection containers:
One urine cup with 1-2 mL of fluid (for gram stain and direct agar inoculation)
One aerobic blood culture bottle
One anaerobic blood culture bottle (recommended for optimum recovery of low numbers of pathogen).

Minimum Volume
Cup: 1mL
Bottles: 5mL each

Instructions
Place 1-2 mL of the peritoneal dialysis fluid into a sterile urine cup.
Inoculate a blood culture set with 5-7 mL of fluid in each bottle (be sure to clean the tops of the bottles prior to inoculation).
Send the cup of fluid and both bottles to the lab.

Transport Container
Sterile urine cup and Blood culture bottle set.

Transport Temperature

Room Temperature

Methodology
Culture

Setup Schedule
Daily from 6 am to 11pm.

Limitations
Cultures should not be inocculated directly into blood culure bottles without first aliquoting  the specimen into a sterile container for direct culture and  direct gram stain. Failure to provide peritioneal dialystate in a sterile  container may delay reporting of positive results and additional identifaction and susceptibility testing of pathogenic isolates.

Reference Range
No growth
