Selective media used for Burkholderia and Staphylococcus aureus isolation in addition to routine sputum protocol.
Gram stain will be performed on sputum samples only (not on deep throat swabs).

Preferred Specimen
Sputum or deep throat swab


Instructions
Expectorated sputum: Have patient rinse or gargle with water and then to cough deeply to produce lower respiratory tract specimen (not postnasal fluid or saliva). 
Induced specimen: have patient rinse mouth with water after brushing gums and tongue. With aid of nebulizer, have the patient inhale about 25 ml of 3-10% normal saline. Collect via suction for pediatric patient unable to produce specimen.
Deep Throat: If sputum specimen not able to be obtained, obtain deep Throat specimen. Using a tongue blade to hold the tongue down, sample back of throat and tonsillar area. Do not touch the cheeks, teeth, or gums with the swab as you withdraw it from the mouth. Send in transport medium.

Specimens are NOT rejected by gram stain criteria as in routine sputum protocol.
