Culture, Anaerobe

Message

Performed in the Microbiology Laboratory x5785
Tissues and aspirates are optimal specimens for anaerobic recovery.
Swabs are the least-desirable specimen type for anaerobic culture and may result in specimen rejection.

Test Code
CXANA

Alias/See Also
Anaerobe Culture,

CPT Codes
87075, 87070, 87205 ( Add 87076 for each specific anaerobic organism fully identified)

Includes
If not already ordered, Aerobic culture (87070) and Gram Stain (87205) are also performed. Gram stain reported with aerobic culture.
(Reflex to additional bacterial isolate identification if pathogenic  anaerobic organisms are isolated)

Preferred Specimen
Abscess Aspirate; Amniotic Fluid via tap, Bartholin's Gland , Bone Marrow.  Bronchoscopic Protected Brushing, Culdocentesis specimen, Fallopian tube, Ovary, Peritoneal Fluid, Pleural fluid, Suprapubic Urine Aspirate, Surgical Biopsy.

Instructions
Abscess or sterile body fluid: Aspirate using syringe, replace needle with Leur Lok cap and hand-transport to lab.
Tissue: add just enough bacteriostatic saline to specimen in sterile cup to keep tissue moist. Deliver immediately to lab.

Transport Container
Aspirate: Syringe, needle replaced with Leur Lok.
Tissue: Sterile screw-cap cup with just enough non-bacteriostatic saline to keep tissue moist.
Swabs: (OR only, NOT preferred specimen type) Anaerobic transport medium.

Transport Temperature
Room temperature ; do NOT refrigerate

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unsuitable sources include: Endocervical, Nasopharyngeal, Perineal, Sputum, Stool, Throat, Urethra, Urine (rare exceptions), Vaginal.
All specimens collected on routine bacterial swabs will be rejected for full anaerobe culture.

Methodology
Culture

Setup Schedule
Sunday - Saturday 6am-11pm

Limitations
Anaerobic culure is not suitable, on sites expected to have high level of normal anaerobic flora.

Reference Range
No Growth

Clinical Significance
Full workup and identification of isolates is performed on approriate sites only eg.. normally sterile tissues and body fluids etc.
Many body sites contain polymicrobial flora which may also include multpile strains of anaerobic bacteria. Specific isolation and full identification of bacterial isolates will only occur, if the site does not contain indigenous normal anaerobic flora or unusual anaerobic flora are observed for that site.
Pease call Mcrobiology x68785 if any questions regarding  anaerobic culture results.
