Preferred Specimen
Specimen fixed in ThinPrep (PreservCyt) fixative. 


Instructions
Collect secretion onto a dacron swab.  Use of other cotton tipped applicator can retain cells and cause unsatisfactory results.  Immediately submerge the swab into a ThinPrep fixative vial and swirl/swish vigorously to release cells.  Discard colletion device.  Do not leave collection device in vial. 
Alternatively, touch a positively charged glass slide to the nipple secretion several times.  Spread uniformly with another slide and spray immediately with fixative or submerge in 95% ethanon.  Make 1 - 2 successive smears.

The ThinPrep vial can be obtained from Cytology Laboratory on Ziskind 5.

Room temperature or refrigerated.
