Fresh specimens are stored in Cytology for one calendar week. Additional Cytology/Immuno/Special Staining requests are dependent on the original volume and cellular content of the specimen. Call Cytology for availability.
For ER, PR, HER 2 NEU requests, the fluid should be collected and delivered IMMEDIATELY to Cytology on Ziskind 5. Testing requires preparation and formalin fixation within 1 hour to minimize cold ischemic time. Page the pathology resident on call for assistance after hours.

Preferred Specimen
Fresh fluid, obtained by paracentesis, thoracentesis or drain, delivered as soon as possible after collection.
Minimum Volume
Cells can be examined from any volume but at least 500cc is preferred. Higher volumes optimize tumor cell recovery. NO FLUID SHOULD BE DISCARDED. All collected fluid should be sent to Pathology on Ziskind 5.
