Message

Test Code
CMVG

CPT Codes
86644

Preferred Specimen
Serum collected in a serum separator tube (SST®)

Minimum Volume
0.5 mL of blood

Transport Temperature
Room temperature

Specimen Stability
Refrigerated:    7 days
Frozen:  Indefinite; no specific expiration time established

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolysis • Gross lipemia • Bacterially contaminated specimens

Methodology
Chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA).  Performed on the Liaison XL.

Setup Schedule
This assay is performed at least twice per week.

Limitations
Test indicates past exposure, not presence of active infection with circulating virus.  Specimens taken early during the acute phase of infection may not contain detectable levels of IgG antibodies

Reference Range
Results are reported as Negative, Equivocal, or Positive.  Equivocal results were repeated and confirmed at the border between Negative and Positive.

Clinical Significance
CMV infections are common and usually asymptomatic. In patients who are immunocompromised, CMV may cause disseminated, severe disease. CMV may cause birth defects in a minority of infected newborns. Antibody IgG may represent prior exposure or recent infection if there is a significant change in titer between acute and convalescent specimens.

Performing Laboratory
Tufts Medical Center Clinical Chemistry Laboratory
