Message
 In "Flu" season an Influenza PCR test will be performed  first to r/o Influenza A and B.
If patient is immunocompromised, critically ill due to respiratory infection or a pediatric patient at high risk for severe complications due to cardiopulmonary disease, consider RVP panel. Call  Microbiology. x 65785 (same specimen may be used)
For Mycoplasma, Chlamydophilia or Bordetella pertussis testing order APNEU Atypical pneumonia panel (same specimen may be used )

Instructions
Deep nasopharyngeal (not nasal) collection is important to test sensitivity.
Insert swab through the nose into the posterior nasopharynx and rotate the swab. Place the inoculated swab into the M6 Viral Transport Media and break off the shaft where scored. Fit the top of the shaft into the lid of the tube and screw top on securely.

Nucleic acids may persist in vivo independent of organism viability. Therefore, detection of organism target(s) does not imply that the corresponding organisms are infectious or are the causative agents for clinical symptoms. Results must be correlated with the clinical history, epidemiological data, and other data available to the clinician evaluating the patient.
