Instructions

Preferably, specimen should be kept fresh and unfixed and  refrigerated as soon as possible after removal from the patient.  Place labeled specimen with paperwork in refrigerator.  Pathology staff will collect throughout the day.  Breast specimens require special treatment.  See separate listing.
RUSH specimens must be clearly designated as such on the requisition and must be delivered directly to Ziskind 5.  For weekend or after hours RUSH specimens, the Anatomic Pathology resident on call should be notiifed at pager 1420. 
 




Transport Container

Clean specimen lidded container and sealed in biohazard bag.




Transport Temperature

Transport direct to lab at room temperature.  Refrigerate if delay in transport anticipated.




Specimen Stability


Time from specimen removal (from patient) to refrigeration must be minimized to avoid degradation of the tissue. 




Setup Schedule
Daily (Monday through Saturday) processing followed by evaluation by attending surgical pathologist.  


Report Available
Expected turnaround: 90% of cases should be reported within 5 working days.  Complicated cases requiring extensive work up including special stains, will require additional time.
