Preferred Specimen
Stool. Note: Fresh specimens yield best results if processed within 30 minutes of collection, Para -pak stool culture  transport media strongly recommended.


Instructions
1. Collect a fresh, liquid stool specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container. 2. Label container with patient’s full name, medical record number, date and actual time of collection and type of specimen. 3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Note: Only one stool culture per day will be processed

Conventional Culture

Reference Range
Negative. Positive pathogens will be identified


Clinical Significance

Useful for the detection of Aeromonas, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, and Yersinia species. Contact Microbiology Dept. if other pathogen is suspected.


Rejection criteria: greater than 3 days hospitalization. Rectal swabs not acceptable for adults.  No more than 1 specimen per day. Recommend 2 specimens over a 2 day period

 


 Rectal swabs may be submitted for VRE detection only.
