Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimens: Expectorated 1. Collect an early-morning specimen (minimum: 5.0 mL) on at least 3 consecutive days (1 per day) in a screw-capped, sterile container. Specimens contaminated with saliva will be rejected.

Nasal secretion, saliva and 24-hour collection is not acceptable.


Methodology
Conventional Culture and Gram Stain

Negative Positive cultures will be identified


Clinical Significance
Useful for the detection of suspected aerobic pathogens. Gram stain is performed and screened for the number of epithelial cells versus white blood cells. Specimens contaminated with saliva will be rejected with a request for a new specimen.
