Instructions
One blood culture consists of 7 -15ml of blood in Aerobic (Blue) and 3-7 ml of blood in Anaerobic (Yellow) BD bottles using sterile technique. Pediatric patients collect Blue only.

1.  Remove caps from each BD bottle and clean with alcohol pad.  2.  Prep vein site with Chloraprep - use 30 second friction scrub and allow to air dry for 30 seconds.  Alternately clean vein site with alcohol pad followed by Chloraprep sepps.  Chloraprep sepps should be applied using concentric circles and allowed to air dry for 30 seconds.  Alternate method:   Scrub site for 60 seconds using Povidone-Iodine swab stick in concentric circles.  Repeat application with 1-2 Povidone-Iodine swabsticks.  3.  Perform veinpuncture by collecting the blood directly into the BD bottle.  Blue bottle should be collected first.
Multiple collection sets:  When more than one set is ordered for collection at the same time, the second set is obtained form a separtely prepared site when possible.  If a second site in not available blood culture may collected 15-30 minutes apart.  Collection of blood at intervals is only indicated when it is necessary to document continous bacteremia in patients with suspected endocarditis or other endovascular (catheter-related) infections.  The physcian may request that the collections be spaced at specific intervals.

Transport Container
BD BacTec Blood Culture Bottles (Aerobic and Anaerobic)

Transport Temperature
Room temperature

Specimen Stability
Transport immediately to Laboratory.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens not in Bactec blood culture bottles.

Methodology
BD FX Colorimetric

Limitations
Cleanse vein site to destroy microorgansims on the skin and prevent microbial contamination of specimen.  Failure to carefully disinfect the venipuncture site can introduce skin surface bacteria inot the blood culture and interfere with the interpretation of the results.

Reference Range
Negative.   Positive cultures will be identified.

Clinical Significance
Useful for the detection of bacterial and fungal organisms. Contact Microbiology Dept. for longer incubation or suspect fungus / yeast.  Final issue of negative results at 5 days.
