Instructions
Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of collection. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Refrigerate if prompt delivery is not possible. Note: this test will be performed on tube #3 or the last tube collected.

Methodology

Coulter count (or manual count via hemocytometer) of cells (WBC, RBC) depending on appearance and instrument limitations. Microscopic smear evaluation for WBC differential.



Reference Range
WBC: 0-5/µL; RBC: 2-5/µl; Segmented Neutrophils: 0-7%; Lymphocytes: 28-96%; Monocytes: 16-56%


Clinical Significance
Useful for determining the extent of infection.
