Instructions
Submit in sterile leakproof container without fixatives. Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible. Blood or Bone marrow draw Yellow SPS tube.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Nasal secretion, saliva, swabs or 24-hour collection is not acceptable.


Methodology
Culture includes liquid media, Lowenstein Jensen media and Acid Fast Stain.

Reference Range
Negative for AFB.  Positives will be identified.


Clinical Significance
Useful for the detection of mycobacterium and other acid-fast organisms includes AFB smear. Specify Source.Yellow SPS tubes acceptable for Blood and Bone marrow. Swabs are unacceptable for culture. First morning sputum samples preferred over 3 days. Final reports of negative cultures at 8 weeks.
