Clinical Significance
Betahydroxybutyrate accounts for the majority of the total ketone body pool. Excess formation of BHB results in a state of ketoacidosis with BHB being the primary compound responsible for the elevated anion gap in ketotic patients. According to the ADA, BHB is the most sensitive marker for the detection of ketoacidosis. It is the preferred method for diagnosing and monitoring diabetic ketoacidosis.
