Preferred Specimen
10 g of formalin-presserved stool


Instructions
Collect a stool specimen using a toilet cap or by placing a clean piece of wax paper over the toilet seat. Add enough specimen to the pink formalin vial until the liquid reaches the Red Fill line on the container label. Mix well. Label the container with the patient full name, (first & last), DOB, date and time of collection. Note: Stool specimen mudt be perserved within 1 hour of collection

Clinical Significance
Useful for the detection of Giardia lamblia and/or Cryptospordium oocysts in fecal material. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are the most common parasites which produce watery diarrhea and which can be life threatening in immunosuppressed patients. The identification is important for control and treatment of the organism.
