Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Plasma
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Spin down and send 2.0 mL of EDTA plasma refrigerated. Note: 1. Indicate plasma on request form. 2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

Serum
Draw blood in an Gold tube. Spin down and send 2.0 mL of serum refrigerated. Note: 1. Indicate serum on request form. 2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated


Methodology
Agglutination with Formalin-Treated Horse Erythrocytes

Clinical Significance
The monospot test is used to detect IgM class heterophile antibodies associated with infectious mononucleosis.
