MessageIf culture is positive, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility will be performed at an additional charge. Clinical specimens should be collected before the initiation of therapy since even a few days of treatment may render the culture negative. Day(s) Test Set Up: Monday through Sunday

Adult - 2 sets (1 aerobic & 1 anaerobic bottle per set)

Instructions
Bactec® blood culture bottles must be used for this procedure.
Pediatric: Draw a single specimen, unless otherwise specified, as follows: 1. Sterilize top of 1 Bactec blood culture bottle with alcohol. 2. Apply tourniquet to patient's arm. 3. Palpate area to locate vein. 4. Sterilize area with alcohol and and then a Chloraprep Frepp applicator or 2 iodines; let site dry for >1 minute. 5. Do not palpate vein after sterilizing area. 6. Draw blood using a Butterfly Collection Kit. 7. Place at least 1mL of blood and not more than 3mL of blood into the pediatric bottle. Mix bottle by inverting 4 or 5 times. 8. Label bottle with patient's full name, DOB, date, time of draw and the collection site. Adults- collect 2 sets of bottles from two different sites (no more than 3/24 hours), unless otherwise specified, as follows: 1. Sterilize tops of BacTec® blood culture bottles with alcohol. 2. Apply tourniquet to patient's arm. 3. Palpate area to locate vein. 4. Sterilize area with alcohol and then a Chloraprep Frepp applicator or 2 iodines; let site dry for >1 minute. 5. Do not palpate vein after sterilizing area. 6. Draw blood using a Butterfly Collection Kit. 7. Collect 5-10 mL of blood into the aerobic bottle and 5 -10 mL of blood into the anaerobic bottle. Mix the bottles by inverting 4 or 5 times. 8. Label the bottles with patient's full name, DOB, date, time of draw and the collection site. 9. Forward without delay to the laboratory.
