Instructions
1. Using a lead pencil, label frosted end of clean glass slide with patient’s full name and site of smear.
2. Obtain specimen with a spatula and endocervical brush. Lubricant cannot be used to insert speculum as this obscures diagnostic cells.
3. Smear material across slide surface.
4. Flood slide immediately with a fixative. Allow fixative to dry completely. Do not allow material on slide to dry out before fixation.
5. Place slide in a plastic slide holder.
6. Label slide holder with patient’s full name and site of smear.
7. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 2. Please complete a pink cytology form (#240) including patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, date and actual time of collection, physician’s name, medical record number, specimen source, and pertinent clinical history and forward it with the specimen. 3. For optimal interpretation, Pap smears should be collected near middle of menstrual cycle. 4. No douching or sexual intercourse for 24 hours prior to specimen collection.
