Instructions
1. Using a lead pencil, label frosted end of glass slides with patient’s name (first and last) and type of specimen prior to obtaining smear. 2. Collect nasal specimen using a sterile swab. 3. Immediately after collection, spread a thin layer of cells on 2 clean, glass slides by rolling the swab across the non-frosted end of slide. (Frosted end of slide should face up.) 4. Allow slides to air dry and transfer to a plastic slide holder. 5. Label slide holder with patient’s full name, medical record number, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen. 6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. Note: 1. A random urine specimen is also acceptable. 2. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 3. To collect samples in wax paper blow nose on piece of wax paper. Transfer a portion of the secretion to properly labelled glass slide. Allow to air dry.
