Sterile body fluid aspirate
Swab specimens are acceptable but are not preferred.




Instructions
1. Aspetically collect 1.0 mL of body fluid in a sterile leakproof container. Note: Specimen source must be noted on the test requisition.


Transport Container
Sterile leakproof container, or a red capped culture transport device  


Transport Temperature
Room temperature


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)


Specimen received > 2 hours of collection.




Methodology
Conventional culture and gram stain

Report Available


Preliminary report available after 24 hours.




Reference Range
Negative


Clinical Significance
Useful for the detection of aerobic bacterial pathogens.
